Amidst intense competition during this year’s STEM Olympiads, a group of Cave Hill Campus students secured an impressive gold award at the regional event, which took place January 17 - 21. The event brought together students from across the Caribbean to compete in STEM-related activities.
Team “Psi-Kicks” which comprised the Cave Hill trio Simeon Green, Ian Francis and Tyreke Jones competed at Level III (ages 19 - 21) in the Mathematics Olympiad segment and successfully tackled challenges ranging from consumer arithmetic to vector calculus.
Green, who is enrolled in the Faculty of Science and Technology, described the event as an unbelievable experience and hopes every Caribbean student will have an opportunity to participate.
“Preparations for the Math Olympiad exposed me to new concepts that I would need for my university degree and future endeavours beyond academia. I have grown immensely; not only in my understanding of certain mathematical concepts but in how I can apply them in real-world situations” he added.
Other segments of the competition included the Computer Coding Olympiad where students were tasked with creating innovative solutions for Caribbean communities and the Robotics Olympiad, which focused on building robot solutions at different complexity levels.
The annual event which is hosted by the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF) contributes to their mission to foster the development and diversification of Caribbean economies through STEM education reform and technology-based entrepreneurship.
Professor Cardinal Warde, Interim Executive Director of the CSF, expressed optimism about the STEM outlook for the region. “This year we raised the bar a little higher than it was in the inaugural year for the Math Olympiad, and I was again impressed by the performance of the medalists.” He also announced that coaching sessions will start in April 2024 to prepare robotics and coding teams for the 2025 Olympiads.
A total of 131 students from 11 Caribbean countries participated, with 39 teams advancing to the finals.
