Caribbean Law Review, the flagship publication of the Faculty of Law at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, is back in circulation after a 15-year hiatus.
The biannual publication, renowned for its academic rigour, made an impactful re-emergence into legal realm discourse with its June special issue calling attention to noncommunicable diseases, one of the most significant health threats to Caribbean countries.
General Editor Nicole Foster said the focus on unhealthy food, alcohol, tobacco and the law “reflects the faculty’s commitment to engagement and advocacy on public policy issues of particular concern to the Caribbean region”.
The Faculty of Law’s premier journal was first launched in 1991 but fell into abeyance in 2009. Its relaunch on April 25, 2024 coincided with the 50
th anniversary of the faculty’s first graduating class.
A call for papers in 2022 yielded submissions from members of the judiciary, civil society, and legal practitioners from Latin America and the Caribbean, and as far afield as Switzerland, Hungary, and India.
Foster, who also heads the Law and Health Research Unit, noted that the relaunch of the publication was the joint effort of the faculty, the Law Library, and the faculty’s international partners, the Global Center for Legal Innovation on Food Environments at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, Georgetown University, and global legal intelligence platform, VLex.
Addressing the event, Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Clive Landis expressed confidence that the publication will continue to uphold the highest standards of academic rigour and intellectual inquiry.
“The Caribbean Law Review has long been regarded as a beacon of enlightenment, providing a platform for the dissemination of cutting-edge research and critical analysis of legal developments in our diverse Caribbean community. From its inception in 1990, this esteemed publication has played a vital role in fostering intellectual inquiry, promoting dialogue, and driving positive change across our legal landscape.
“The 15-year hiatus that our journal experienced left a void – a silence that echoed through classrooms, courtrooms and law libraries. During those quiet years, critical legal opinions might have gone unshared, groundbreaking theories perhaps remained dormant, and emerging legal trends lacked an important platform. But today we reclaim our voice.”
Interim Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Antonius Hippolyte said the publication builds on The UWI’s research tradition by disseminating high-quality Commonwealth legal scholarship.
“The faculty is confident the Caribbean Law Review will continue to be respected as the journal of choice for legal professionals within the region and beyond. The intention is for the revived Caribbean Law Review to continue its tradition of excellence, publishing high-quality legal scholarship with a particular emphasis on Caribbean legal developments while still contributing to legal conversations on issues of global importance.”
The launch was attended by Isabel Barbosa, Associate Director of Healthy Families Initiative at the Washington-based O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, and Managing Director of VLex, Masoud Gerami.
Gerami anticipates that the Caribbean Law Review will be as successful as the Faculty of Law Library’s unique CARILAW collection of court judgments from the Commonwealth Caribbean, which has reached over 30 countries globally.
Plans are underway for the publication of the December issue of the Caribbean Law Review, which will feature contributions from the faculty’s 50
th anniversary lecture series, among other thought-provoking and insightful material.
