Dozens of international media and film production professionals gathered at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus on April 15 for the inaugural Cross Continental Forum (CCF), a high-profile gathering intent on fostering partnerships across the motion picture industry.
The event, co-hosted by CaribbeanTales Media Group, Imagine Media International, and The Faculty of Culture, Creative, and Performing Arts at The UWI Cave Hill, brought together acclaimed actress CCH Pounder, celebrated film producer Paul Garnes, and a diverse group of international media professionals to explore co-production possibilities and create partnerships across continents.
The forum kicked off with a captivating screening of Ava Duvernay's critically acclaimed film 'Origin' at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (EBCCI), setting the stage for a dynamic exchange of ideas and collaboration in the global film and media industries.
Attendees were welcomed by senior lecturer and Head of Department of Creative and Performing Arts at The UWI Cave Hill, Andrew Millington, as well as CEO at Caribbean Tales Media Group Frances-anne Solomon. Millington emphasized the significance of having Pounder moderate the interactive talk back session with Garnes and the audience, stressing that the two movie moguls “[brought] a wealth of experience and insight to the table, and their involvement elevated the discussion to a higher level."
Reflecting on the screening of 'Origin,' Millington noted its profound impact on the audience. He stated: "The film served as a catalyst for exploring complex issues and perspectives on both historical and social stratifications of caste, enriching the conversation in meaningful ways."
Agreeing with the film’s capacity to spark discussions on these multifaceted issues, Garnes emphasized the importance of storytelling in fostering understanding and empathy across cultures. Solomon expressed optimism about the forum's potential to bridge new alliances stating, "We are excited to bring together a diverse group of international professionals to facilitate new co-ventures."
The week-long forum seeks to serve as a unique platform for fostering partnerships, networking, and exploring co-production possibilities among UK, Canada, Africa, and Caribbean professionals. Engaging discussions, networking opportunities, and collaborative initiatives among participants are aimed at driving innovation and growth in the global film and media industries.
