• Do I need to re-register even if I am only working on my Research Paper/ Writing up my Thesis?

Yes - you must register regardless of the stage of your programme until your degree has been awarded.  This is part of the contract you signed on acceptance.

The only students who are NOT required to register in any semester are those on approved Leave of Absence for that semester. 

Note that if you are not registered you are not entitled to receive supervision, use any UWI facilities, present seminars or submit your paper / thesis for examination.

• How and when do I make payments?

For some programmes the programme fee is billed on first registration and for other programmes the fees are billed according to the courses for which you register each semester. 

Occasionally you will see multiple sections of the same course or a range of billing hours presented to you in CHOL.   You are required to select the full billing section the first time you register for a course.  If you inadvertently register for the incorrect section note that the Campus reserves the right to correct the registration.  If you have received approval to re-take a course 'Exams Only' or 'Coursework Only', you must contact the Office of Graduate Studies and Research to enter that registration on your behalf.

Students in UGC-funded programmes are billed the relevant tuition fees and economic costs every semester until their degree is awarded.

Note that all financial matters are the responsibility of the Campus Bursary.

To remain on the Register of Students you students must register on-line every semester and pay the applicable fees until your degree has been awarded.

• How do I register 'Exams Only' or 'Coursework Only'?

If you were unsuccessful in the examination component of a course the first time you attempted it and have received approval to retake that examination, you must sit it the next time the course is offered.

If you were unsuccessful in the coursework component of a course the first time you attempted it and have received approval to re-submit coursework, you will be given a date by which it must be submitted.

These registrations are entered administratively and you are to email the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu during the published registration period for this to be done.  You should not attempt to register yourself for examination re-sits or coursework re-submissions.

Note that the Examination fee is to be paid during the published registration period.

• I am doing a research paper/ thesis - How do I check for plagiarism?

The University allows you to check your papers for plagiarism using the Turnitin software.
To use the service you must first create a student account as follows:

1. Contact the School for Graduate Studies and Research by email to turnitingrad@uwimona.edu.jm for credentials.
2. Visit the Turnitin website at www.turnitin.com and click on create account,
3. Under New Students Start Here in bullet item # 2 click on create a user profile
4. Below Have You Ever Used Turnitin? scroll down until you see Create A New Account click on student. (Note the credentials will not work in any other instance).
5. Under Create A New Student Account insert the credentials (i.e. class id and enrollment password), complete the rest of the form and follow the instructions.

You will be able to see your originality report (i.e. the system’s report on your submitted research paper/project/thesis/dissertation) by clicking on the 'show details' link in their portfolio after making a submission.  You can re-submit your paper to this class container as many times as is necessary.

• I am doing a research paper/ thesis - how do I get IRB approval?

The Cave Hill Institutional Board website gives information as to who should submit proposals for review and the process for doing so. All applications for grant applications must include a statement that the IRB approval has been given for the research. Visit The Research Ethics website for detailed information.

• What is GRIP?

The Graduate Studies and Research Information Portal (GRIP) at The University of the West Indies (UWI) is a gateway to all four (4) Campuses (i.e. Cave Hill, Mona,  St. Augustine and Open Campuses).  It consolidates information from these sites enabling easy access to more information on Graduate Studies and Research at the UWI.
