Senior Associate Lecturer, Paediatrics

Third Year MBBS Clerkship Co Ordinator Consultant PICU, Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Clinical Sciences

Since completing my Paediatric residency and attaining a clinical fellowship in Paediatric Intensive Care at Cambridge, I have been an active Consultant in PICU at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Barbados from 2012. Prior to the aforementioned assignment, I was appointed as Associate Lecturer in Child Health at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in 2007. I have been an examiner for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across campuses at the UWI. I was subsequently promoted to Senior Associate Lecturer at UWI in 2019 and in that same year, I spearheaded formal Paediatric Sedation protocols as lead consultant.
My clinical work now includes daily PICU rounds as Barbados only PICU trained consultant, assisting in the Paediatric Cardiovascular Clinic as well as on-call coverage includes all facets of paediatrics beyond the PICU. I am deeply invested in quality control in the PICU. As a result, I have developed performance indicators aimed at improving the quality of care. I have subsequently developed a special interest in Traumatic Brain injury with my present focus being on brain death criteria and formal establishment of guidelines locally. As the sole PICU consultant locally and one of the few PICU consultants in the Caribbean, I am available 24/7 and also oversee overseas referrals from neighbouring islands with facilitation of patient transfers. Furthermore, I organise the QEH’s Annual PICU conference. I am also a  member in the Drugs and Therapeutic Committee and Specially Authorised Drugs committee.
Internationally, I am a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine who contributed to the development of an online module in paediatric mechanical ventilation. (Appointed as Vice Chair of Pediatric online Module ,SCCM)Additionally, I became a member of the Allergy and Asthma Network in India.
