Anglophone Caribbean Studies for the Non-native English Speaker

On this course, you will learn about the contributions made to the varieties of food and in some cases the methods of preparation by the early inhabitants. By focusing on some popular dishes/foods that differ by name across countries, you will also find out about some similarities and differences in Caribbean cuisine. 

Exploring Creoles and dialects will provide essential insight on the three main variations of English in the Caribbean. It will help you to identify the subtle linguistic differences among Caribbean English speakers that may have gone unnoticed before. Through learning about native accents and language within the Anglophone Caribbean, you will feel more at ease when communicating with your Caribbean colleagues and friends.

If music is the creative heartbeat of the world, Caribbean people have strengthened it with original musical forms. Through sight and sound, you will enjoy and appreciate the range and power of Anglophone Caribbean music that charts the region’s history, the horrors and hopes of its people, and the resilience and richness of their spirit. You will also discover something of the global appeal of the music-making.

Willingly and unwillingly, Caribbean peoples have come from Europe, Africa and Asia. Through an audio-visual experience of diverse festivals, you will appreciate their ethnic, religious and cultural variety; their challenges and creativity; and their impact on the world and the world’s impact on them. You might even be encouraged to sample this richness for yourself.

The Windrush scandal. Black Lives Matter. The blacklisting of Caribbean countries as non-compliant tax havens. There is so much trouble in the world for Caribbean people in the region and diaspora. Literature, it is said, only dwells on problems rather than offering solutions. But this is not true. By surveying major topics, writers and genres through sampling poetry, prose and drama, you will gain deeper appreciation for the individual and social experiences of this region. You will consider the literary insights that could help overcome the déjà vu of colonization, racism, plantation slavery, independence, environmental degradation, racism, and troubled identities and relationships.

This takes the course to a climax for literature at times draws on the language, music and festivals of the region.

Building an Online Course in English for the Non-native Speaker

This course is designed for non-native English-speaking teachers who have the mandate of teaching their courses online through English, but who have limited knowledge about online course design and delivery. The aim is to help these teachers design, set up and deliver interactive online course content through English.

This is a highly interactive and intensive course designed specifically for conference interpreters who have a high level of proficiency in English, but require specific knowledge of the language regarding Caribbean issues.

English for Business Professionals

This course consists of 12 weeks of instruction, but you may opt to do 4 or 8 weeks. A variety of methods are used to build communication skills that are critical for doing business in the global milieu. You will be equipped with the tools and strategies for negotiating meaning, and socialising proficiently in the target language. The syllabus includes:

ESL for Healthcare Professionals

ESL with Business and Tourism

This course is a combination of ESL and Tourism Awareness with Fundamentals in Business Workshops (3 months ESL plus 1 month Tourism and Business).  It offers an overview of tourism and business while reinforcing the new language in a specific learning context.

ESL with Ecotourism

This course is a combination of ESL and ecotourism awareness and provides participants with the opportunity to learn more about protecting and preserving their natural environments as citizens, as well as learning to do the same in their capacity as tourists, while learning English.

ESL with Sustainable Destination Management

This course is a combination of the English as a Second Language (ESL) and the principles and practices of sustainable destination management.

General English

This course aims to develop the student’s communicative competence by adopting an integrated-skills approach. It can be completed face-to-face for one month or online, for three weeks.

The online course involves real-time teaching, guided learning activities which participants are expected to complete largely on their own with some assistance from peers and instructors, as well as independent learning activities. Each class will be 3 hours (for a total of 9 hours), per week. Applicants must select a class time for each of the days selected, either 9:00 am - 12:00 noon (AST) or 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm (AST).

As part of the course, participants will be expected to monitor their own learning through reflective oral/written activities.  Instructors will present materials, activities, resources, strategy training, assignments and assessments which complement each other to improve participants’ knowledge and proficiency. The idea is to help participants discover how the parts of the language as a system are put together to work integratively.

This course consists of 60 hours of English for academic purposes (EAP). It focuses on:
